A service for educators
a guided experiential reflection
Some experiences stay with you. Not because you haven't moved on,
but because you haven't yet understood what they were asking of you.
Illuminate is a structured reflective process designed for educators who want to make genuine meaning of a significant professional experience — a challenging transition, a formative chapter, a period of growth they can sense but haven't yet named.
It is not coaching. It is not therapy. It is something rarer: a process grounded in rigorous qualitative research methodology that takes your lived experience seriously — and returns it to you understood.
Illuminate begins with a single, unhurried conversation of around ninety minutes, conducted via Zoom or Teams at a time that suits you. Your interviewer is an experienced educator and pedagogical leader with over 28 years across Victorian schools, trained in the disciplines of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.
This is not an interview with an agenda, and it is not a coaching session. The questions are open and patient. You do most of the talking. Nothing you bring is too small or too obvious — often the things that seem smallest are the ones that matter most.
Many people describe the conversation itself as unexpectedly valuable. Not because of anything said to them, but because being genuinely heard — without agenda, without interruption, without assumptions about what your experience should mean — has a quality that is difficult to find elsewhere.
After your conversation, your words are carefully read, re-read, and analysed using the same interpretative framework applied in serious qualitative research. What emerges from this process is not a summary of what you said — it is a structured account of what your experience reveals about you.
The themes running through it. The tensions within it. The meaning latent in it that you may not yet have named. This takes time, and it is done with care.
Within two to three weeks of your conversation, you receive a personalised written Illuminate document. It contains three things:
A brief framing of the experience you brought and what the reflection set out to illuminate.
Typically four to six themes that emerged from the analysis, each with a careful interpretive account of what that theme reveals about how you made sense of your experience.
Your own words — selected because they captured something essential — returned to you with the context to understand why they matter.
The document is not clinical. It is written to you, in language that is warm and direct. Reading it should feel like being understood.
Once you have had time to sit with the document, you are invited to a short follow-up conversation — around thirty minutes — to discuss what resonated, what surprised you, and what you might want to take forward.
This is not a presentation of findings. It is a conversation between two people who have both read the same careful account of your experience.
A brief conversation to make sure Illuminate is right for what you're bringing.
A ninety-minute guided reflection via Zoom or Teams, at a time that suits you.
Your conversation is carefully analysed and your Illuminate document is prepared over two to three weeks.
A thirty-minute follow-up once you've had time to sit with what you've received.
